"lincoln" leads the academy awards with 123 nominations. back east now a busy week ahead in washington. preparations are already underway for the inauguration ceremony. it is back to work on the hill as congress takes up the president's cabinet picks, immigration and the debt ceiling. vice president biden finishes his recommendations on gun control. nbc tracie potts has the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we saw the inaugural preps, the rehearsal here on capitol hill over the weekend, but now the focus this week will be inside the capitol. president obama among them an those cabinet nominations including chuck hagel for secretary of defense, both democrats and republicans here still have a lot of questions

about hagel and his views. they plan to ask those questions at the confirmation hearings. also congress has got to deal with the debt ceiling. we're hitting it yet again. sometime in mid-february, authorities believe. and this time it looks like republicans will be pushing for cuts and social will be on the table. finally, you mentioned vice president biden meeting today with cabinet members to finalize recommendations on guns including pushing for an assault weapons ban, but also what he said is a comprehensive approach to gun control. the nra and others don't believe in assault weapons ban can pass in congress. we'll get his recommendations tomorrow. >> thank you. colin powell is speaking out on nbc's "meet the press" he endorsed chuck hagel to be the new defense secretary. he said hagel would do a great job at the pentagon. powell also fired harsh words at

his own republican party. >> there's also a dark -- a dark vain of intolerance in some parts of the party. what do i mean by that? what i mean by that they still sort of look down on minorities. how can i evidence that? when i see a former governor say that the president is shucking and jiving. >> powell added that the gop is having an identity problem and if it doesn't change they're going to be in trouble. president obama ordered american forces to help france in a failed rescue operation in somalia. the u.s. briefly provided limited technical support to french forces trying to rescue an intelligence agent being held by islamic extremists. a second french shoulder has died from gunshot wounds after a rescue attempt. a french fighter plane bombed rebel targets in north

mali on sunday. radical groups are trying to extend their power beyond north m mali. it was a weekend of record-setting temperatures in washington and philadelphia, flights were delayed for hours due to this dense fog. in the west unseasonably cold weather. farmers have been scrambling to save $2 billion in citrus from near-freezing temperatures. with that we will bring in our own bill karins in a second. first your morning dish of scrambled politics. with president obama's second inaugural one week away, an official store has opened near the capitol selling tote bags, t-shirts, buttons lashgs pell pins and other souvenirs. former president george h.w. bush may be released from the hospital in the coming days, that's according to a family spokesman it could even happen today. but there's been no confirmation of that. robert f. kennedy junior

says he believes there was more than one gunman who assassinated his uncle in 1963. rfk junior also privately doubted the accuracy of the warren commission report on the death of jfk. vice president joe biden is about to send his recommendations to president obama and proposals for new gun control legislation, but he used some interesting words to describe his progress saying he was "shooting for tuesday to hand it in." he went on to say "there is no silver bullet to stop the killing." the white house is giving a detailed response to petitions for construction of a death star like in star wars. the tongue in cheek response entitled "this isn't the petition response you're looking for" says the administration does not support blowing up planets. also it costs too much money and could be described by one man in a spaceship.

and that is your morning dish of scrambled politics. now we'll look at the national weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins what is going on with the weather? >> fascinating. >> i was watching people playing basketball in short sleeves, tank tops. i'm not complaining. >> you don't own a ski resort. >> that's true. some people in new england are very much complaining. a lot of extremes out there. winter returned in a big way to the midwest and down through the deep south. the east, the cold air has not arrived yet. it will take its time, too. it will not slide to the east until next weekend. ahead of it the fog was pea soup fog in so many areas from southern new england all through the mid-atlantic. now we have rainy conditions throughout the deep south. temperatures at this hour for this time of day, this time of year ridiculous. it is 56 degrees in d.c., 64 degrees right now in atlanta. that's with no sunshine at all. that's the morning low. it's incredible. we have some rain out there. but a fog is probably more of a

problem than the rain this morning. the visibility now, new york city, half a mile. half a mile in hartford. about a quarter mile in philadelphia. okay in boston. but, you know, it's hit and miss. you can go in one valley, it's dense as could be, especially near rivers. other areas are not bad. d.c. is okay right now i'm sure philadelphia and new york city airport also have big problems. the highways and your morning commute also problematic. rain streaming up through new orleans, alabama and mississippi. expect rain in virginia, too. the windchills, minneapolis to denver, all of the northern plains, it's a frigid morning. even dallas has an 18 degree windchill. this has been a crazy weather pattern as of late, at least there's no big ice or snowstorms heading anywhere soon. >> that's good news. all eyes in the auto world are on motor city today as the media gets a sneak peek at the hottest wheels rolling off the line of the detroit auto show.
